Cancun has sunshine year round and can be very warm during the months and an occasion rain shower can occur in the afternoon or evening. Knowing this should help you know what to bring with you on your vacation to Cancun.
The top number one item you should take with you to Cancun is sunscreen. Any time you are outdoors whether on one of the beautiful beaches or out sightseeing around the Archeology sites you will be in the sun. If you are not use to the sun south of the equator you can burn easily even underwater. Do not forget to use sunscreen on your feet, ears, lips, and even your scalp if it is bare. Watch the sunscreen you purchase, some beaches and parks such as Xel-Ha and Xcaret do not allow sunscreen with oil. It would be safer to buy eco-safe lotion.
If you will be out hiking away from the beach area, insect repellant is also a great item you should bring. Mosquito's enjoy this tropical climate as much as us humans. A sun visor or summer hat will also be wonderful for keeping the direct sunrays from bearing down on your head.
Pack for how many days you will be visiting Cancun, do not over pack, this will just give you more to carry. Bring swim suits (at least 2), swim suit cover up, summer tops, shorts, sundresses, comfortable shoes, sandals, sunglasses, and if you plan on going to an upscale restaurant at least one dressier outfit. Most of Cancun is very casual and everyone dresses comfortable, t-shirts, or swim suits with a sarong draped around them. In the evening, it may be a little cool, so a thin wind breaker type jacket or sweater would be perfect. And at least one beach towel, many hotels do not have beach towels for their guests to use.
Carrying your passport and your Mexican tourist permit is a must to have with you at all times. Check with insurance company and bring copies of your medical and automobile insurance. But, if you are going to rent a car in Cancun, you will still have to purchase insurance in Mexico. Know what your limits are on your credit cards before you leave. Have all of your information with you regarding your lodging accommodations with a telephone number and directions. Place all of our documents into a zippered bag to protect documents from humidity. These are items you should carry with you on the plane. Then after you arrive keep these items in a safe place.
If you have prescription medication that you must bring with you to Cancun, do not check your medication, carry them with you. Keep all of your medications in their original bottle to avoid any confusion. You can also bring along a written prescription or a doctor's statement in case your medication may not be easily recognized. Illegal drug transportation is very serious, so be sure that you protect yourself from any confusion.
If you are taking any glass bottles, such as perfume or cologne, it is best to seal them in a zippered bag. This will protect any other items that are in your suitcase from the danger of leaking or broken bottles. Bring along some extra large zippered bags for placing your wet clothing in after you have been swimming. You can also use them for keeping sand out of your camera and film.
What about your camera and film? Today, with the bomb detection devices your film can be harmed. It would be best if you wait until you arrive in Cancun to purchase film for your camera. You can also find photo shops in Wal-mart or some other retail shop that can develop your film before you come home. This will ensure that you will have your photos to cherish.
If you enjoy scuba diving and would love to take photos underwater, bring along a disposable underwater camera. Bringing along your own scuba gear or snorkeling gear, this will save you plenty of time. You will not have to rent gear while you are on vacation.
If you really have to bring along your valuables, they should stay with you. Anytime you bring along valuables you are taking the chance that they could be lost or stolen.
Other small things that we all tend to forget when packing to go on vacation are band aids, antibiotic cream, tweezers, nail clippers, aspirin, toothbrush, tooth paste, shampoo, and deodorant.
Now, to pack all of these items and make them fit without having to carrying so much luggage, use the roll method for your clothing. You can roll up each clothing item and then put other items in between in the zippered bags.
