Hit the open road and feel the wind blow through your hair - renting a car in Cancun is everything it's made out to be. It's exceptional.
In Cancun, there is only one way to get around. Specifically, that way of getting around is best done in a car, and unless you take a taxi or commandeer the vehicle of some hapless stranger, the chances of your driving in anything but a rental car are slim. So finding out about the best places to go rent a car and get the best deal possible should be a top priority for you - something to learn a little bit about before your trip here - if you at all plan to make use of the great luxury, fun and access to important tourist destinations that the act of renting a car provides.
Indeed, renting a car in Cancún is just about the most important part of your vacation here on the Yucatan Peninsula (where Cancun is situated) if you are, like me and countless other resort vacationers in beautiful southern Mexico, someone who is eager to explore the surrounding region and take home memories of the exceptional countryside, deliciously secluded turquoise water beaches and breathtaking Mayan ruins.
Indeed, taking part in the car rentals culture in Cancun helps to offer adventurous Cancun vacationers like you yet another opportunity to experience the great American ideal of independence and mobility while you are on your hard earned vacation time in the beautiful land of the Yucatán, visiting the fabulous town of Cancun.
Where To Go
Currently there are several excellent car rental spots right at the local airport or in Cancun itself. If you don't reserve in advance, I would say that you should be sure to check around for the best rates possible upon arrival. From experience, however, I would strongly recommend making the Cancun car rental reservation ahead of time. You don't want to waste hours of your precious vacation time stuck filling out application forms. When making these reservations, you can go ahead and trust the major industry names. These companies are usually able to deliver the better cars for the better prices. This way you will end up saving both time and money - and that's a good thing.
Also, you should decide well in advance if you will want to go for a weekly rate, or just use the car for a single trip (2-4 days, say). Many companies here charge weekly rates, for rental situations in which the car is out for 5 days or more than five days. So plan ahead, and enjoy your trip!
Cancun Driving Tips
Here are a few tips that may prove useful while driving the wild - although potentially very safe - roads of Cancun. The first feature of the Yucatan roads that you will to note is that people can tend to drive a little bit, well, let's just say erratically here. Even fellow tourists seem to adapt extremely well to the new, foreign style of driving. No matter, it's important to be safe. So first of all, be careful when you are making that left turn! Cars behind you may want to pass, and by all means let them pass you before you attempt to go. Also, be aware that the drivers of other cars may be passing you on the right side as well as the left side indiscriminately. That's because the shoulder (if it exists at all) is often used as an extra lane here in this quaint country of Mexico. Another thing to look out for is the left blinker. While it does sometimes actually signal an impending left turn, it can also be intended as the driver's way of informing the car behind it that it is okay to pass. It is a strange rule, but it is true - just view it as one more thing to know while on the road here in your rental car.
Also, Mexico is a lot less timid when it comes to displaying armed personnel in military uniform at checkpoints throughout the country. From Baja California to the Yucatan Peninsula, it is quite common to pass through these road blocks. Fear nothing unless you are carrying drugs or weapons.
